Getting around North Cyprus is straightforward once you understand the shape of the area. From Villa Zeytin in Karşıyaka, the right transport plan gives you easy access to beaches, restaurants, supermarkets, Kyrenia, Bellapais and longer day trips without relying on taxis for every outing.
Start with the real question
Decide your transport before you arrive
For a short stay based mostly at the villa, a transfer and occasional taxis can work. For a proper Karşıyaka holiday with beaches, restaurants, shopping and day trips, a car gives far more flexibility.
That is especially true if you want to explore beyond the main coast road, visit mountain sites, plan a full day out or avoid arranging every evening around taxi availability.
Choose the transport plan that fits the holiday
Pre booked transfer
Regardless of your arrival time, we recommend pre booking a transfer. It is essential after late flights, and helps you reach the villa without navigating unfamiliar roads.
Taxis
Good for evenings out, airport journeys and one off trips when nobody wants to drive. Confirm fare or charging basis before setting off.
Dolmuş
Shared minibuses can be useful on some main routes, but they are not a direct substitute for a car when staying in a village villa.
Independence and practicalities
Driving on the left: just like the UK, traffic moves on the left hand side of the road. Standard road signs are used, although local driving habits, junctions and rural roads can take a little getting used to.
The flexibility of a car: for most guests, a rental car is the most practical way to explore beyond the main towns. It gives quick access to beaches, restaurants and shopping around the west Kyrenia area, while also opening up mountain castles, western archaeological sites and the Karpaz Peninsula.
Road conditions: main routes are generally straightforward, but be prepared for narrow village lanes, winding mountain roads, tight corners and sudden changes in road surface. Posted speed limits are enforced by camera systems.

Green Line crossings and hire car insurance
The Green Line can affect car hire because permission and insurance are not always the same thing. Check the hire agreement first, the insurance position second and current checkpoint arrangements third.
Do not assume it can be driven south
Cars hired in North Cyprus are generally not insured for use in the Republic of Cyprus unless specific arrangements are in place. The hire company may also restrict crossing. Ask before booking and get the answer in writing.
Permission and insurance are separate issues
Cars hired in the Republic of Cyprus often have no insurance cover in the north. Some crossing points can sell insurance for driving in the north, but that does not override a restriction in the rental agreement and may not cover damage to the hire car itself. Confirm the rental company’s permission before travelling.
Do not leave it to the checkpoint
Do not plan a crossing on the assumption that details can be resolved at the border. Permission, rental terms and insurance coverage must be secured in writing before you travel.

The dolmuş network
Public transport consists largely of shared minibuses and buses commonly called dolmuş. They operate on established routes between the main towns and nearby settlements and can be a simple, inexpensive way of getting about.
Services are most useful on main corridors linking places such as Lefkoşa/Nicosia, Girne/Kyrenia and Gazimağusa/Famagusta. They do not operate like a British timetable network with clearly marked stops everywhere; on many routes, passengers use safe roadside pick up points and flag the vehicle down.
For mountain castles, isolated beaches, remote archaeological sites or the deep Karpaz Peninsula, the dolmuş network is not a realistic substitute for a car.
Short main road journeys
Dolmuş routes can help on busier corridors when timing is flexible and you are comfortable with informal pick up points.
Village based villa days
They are less useful when you want to carry shopping, visit smaller beaches, reach a restaurant at night or explore mountain roads.

Routes, operating patterns and pick up points can vary. Check locally before building a day around public transport.
Strategic travel: taxis and pre booked transfers
Taxis
Taxis are available locally, in the main towns and around larger hotels. They are useful for occasional evenings out when nobody wants to drive. Longer journeys may be quoted at a fixed price, so confirm the fare or charging basis before setting off.
Pre booking
For arrivals through Ercan, Larnaca or Paphos, a pre arranged transfer is the simplest way to arrive. Once you meet your driver, the route to Karşıyaka is already dealt with..
