North Cyprus Travel Guide
North Cyprus changes quickly between the Kyrenia Range, the north coast, old walled towns, timeless villages and the long road towards the Karpaz Peninsula. From the harbour and backstreets of Kyrenia to quiet beaches, mountain roads, historic sites and small local restaurants, there is far more to discover here than most first-time visitors realise. Our North Cyprus travel guide brings together the places we know and genuinely recommend, with ideas for things to do, beaches to visit, villages to explore and practical advice to help you make the most of your stay. It is a guide shaped by time spent here, regular visits and a real affection for this part of the island.
A guide built for your stay
Villa Zeytin is located in Karşıyaka, west of Kyrenia, between the Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. This guide starts with the places closest to the villa in Karşıyaka, the surrounding coast, nearby beaches and local restaurants before taking you towards Kyrenia town, Bellapais village and further across North Cyprus.
That order will help you to understand the area, what is close by and hopefully help you in planning day trips. The local guides show you places that are within easy reach from the villa, where you might go for a swim, which restaurants are worth considering and how Karşıyaka connects with nearby Lapta, Alsancak and the road into Kyrenia.
You do not need to read everything before you arrive, and the guide is not intended to give you a rigid itinerary. Start with the local area so you know what is around the villa, then choose the beaches, restaurants and places that genuinely appeal. Days can be as relaxing as you want, go for a swim, lunch by the sea and an afternoon in the pool back at the villa; others might take you into Kyrenia, up to Bellapais or further across the island.
Once you have a feel for what is nearby, use the wider sections to plan the bigger days out. The guide covers practical information as well as places to visit, so you can move between local recommendations, things to do, driving advice and longer trips.
The aim is to help you understand this part of North Cyprus, make better use of your time and discover places you might otherwise miss.
New to North Cyprus? Start here
For most first-time visitors, this is the simplest way through the guide:
Start with Karşıyaka and the coast so you know what is close to the villa.
Choose a few beaches, nearby restaurants and local places to visit, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the villa and pool.
Then look at Kyrenia, Bellapais and Nicosia, choose the things to do that most appeal, and use the wider island guides for the trips you most want to make.
How North Cyprus fits together
Karşıyaka and the Northern coastline are the starting point for a stay at Villa Zeytin. Karşıyaka itself has a real village feel alongside everyday services, while Lapta and Alsancak sit further east along the coast towards Kyrenia. This is the part of the island worth getting to know first, for shopping, local meals, beach choices and sight seeing. Our Local Area Guide explains how those places connect rather than treating them as unrelated names.
Kyrenia and Bellapais form the obvious nearby sightseeing pair, but they offer different days. Kyrenia town is harbour, castle, old-town lanes and a busier centre. Bellapais Village sits above the coast, where the abbey, village approach and slopes behind Kyrenia change the setting completely. See the Kyrenia Harbour & Town guide and Bellapais Abbey & Village guide.
North Nicosia/Lefkoşa is a compact old-city day built around walking: Kyrenia Gate, Büyük Han, Selimiye Mosque, Arasta and the practical reality of a divided capital. It is not a substitute for Kyrenia or Famagusta; it has its own urban character and needs a different pace.
Famagusta/Gazimağusa and Salamis belong to the east. The walled city, major religious buildings and the scale of Salamis justify a proper day rather than a brief visit. Farther east, the road begins to draw out towards Boğaz and the Karpaz Peninsula.
The Karpaz Peninsula is the longest commitment from the villa. Villages, open coast, sensitive beaches and sacred sites sit along a route where distance and daylight matter more than the map first suggests. It is one of the places where an early start, fewer stops and realistic return planning improve the day.
The distances across Northern Cyprus are modest, but heat, parking, mountain roads, old-city walking and the temptation to add one more stop can make a day feel much longer. The strongest plans usually have one main purpose and enough room for a meal, a pause or a change of mind.
